Support Local Business During Covid-19
As the city begins to re-open we face a lot of unknowns. After months of self isolating, we’ve gone through the novelty of stay at home life, the collective trauma of illness and loss, and a period of unprecedented reflection as the nation takes a hard look at its values as the upcoming election looms. I’ve revisited this blog post probably 4 times this year and it always ends back in my drafts, possibly because each time I’ve gotta add to the long list of sh*t we’ve gone through in 2020.
But, ever resilient, we’ve managed to adapt to life online more than ever and I’ve had the opportunity to connect and revisit with many local NYC businesses that deserve your attention and support. So, I’ve compiled a list of folks worthy of promotion. Some are clients, some are professionals who have supported or collaborated with me in the past, all are excellent at what they do. Whether it’s making a purchase, or following their instagram and recommending them to a friend - these NYC based businesses are a few of my personal favorites.
RECO BKLYN
I worked as an office manager at RECO BKLYN between 2015-2017 so saying that this business is run ethically and resourcefully comes from an intimate knowledge of their work and product. Owner Roger Benton is the salt of the earth, extremely talented and forthright. Their business model recycles NYC trees that have fallen from natural causes and harvests them into beautiful statement furniture. Perfect spot to purchase a custom desk for your new home office.

BROOKLINTERIORS
Brooklyn based interior design firm which prioritizes design sourcing from local and women owned businesses. Alicia Hassen has a results oriented pricing model that makes hiring an interior designer an easy choice, and offers services to both homeowners and renters. What most impresses me about Alicia’s spaces is her seamless use of custom pieces and built-ins which make excellent use of often underutilized space - essential for co-habituating. And when could be a better time to refresh your space than after spending months at home in it?

POWER HAIR
I’ve been going to Power Hair since 2015 when it was located in Amanda Power’s apartment - since then she’s moved brick and mortar locations twice, each more powerful than the last. Yes, she’s given me pixies, bobs and shags as well as fixed my botched diy platinum hair, but she’s also given me a lot to look up to as a business women. I’ve learned a lot about brand development watching her business grow in the past 5 years - she’s gotten so busy I can even vouch for her other talented stylists, as well as her spaces Covid-19 prevention plan. If you’re looking rough after months at home, it’s likely time to make a hair appointment anyway.

I’ve been lucky to know Joe Consiglio for the past 15 years, and have worked with him as my personal and spiritual trainer since April of this year. I couldn’t be more proud of him as a friend for starting his lifestyle coaching business and grateful for the work he’s done with me during a year where I’ve grieved family, faced uncertainty and struggled to motivate myself. Body by Broseph is a holistic approach to mental and physical wellness that is both fun and challenging - which are especially important during 2020. His affordable services range from private instruction, virtual yoga classes and tarot readings. He just launched his site and keeps his followers up to date on upcoming classes via instagram.
